Electric Guitars – Ways to choose the Right One
Whether you are young or old, a beginner or professional, there is no sound in the world like a finely tuned electric guitar. Here we have given some important considerations when purchasing the perfect electrical guitar,
Check how resonant the guitar is:
This is the crucial thing to look for. It has more to do with the wood than anything else. The pickups can be altered, but the wood makes the guitar. Check for sustain length, this based on the wood the neck is made of and how it is installed, a very, very important aspect of a guitar's sound.
Never estimate the value by the price:
Some of the expensive guitars may have the resonance of a brick, and there are cheap guitars that really sing. So never estimate the value of the guitars by their price.
Run through the fret board and check how it ‘sings':
When you pluck a string, you should get a vibration in the wood that you can hear all over the guitar. It should last a few seconds.
Realize that the guitar neck is very important; it should fit with your hands:
You have a number of nut widths, they sets the distance from the E string to high E string. The other features the shape of the back of the neck.
- For Big Hands: Gibson 50′s style, fender C/U shape.
- For Thin Hands: Gibson 60′s style, fender thin/V shape.
- For Really Thin Hands: Ibanez wizard's, etc.
Guitar and the amplifier should go hand in hand:
These two are need to sound good together. The pickups have the ability to do a lot with this as they set the ‘gain' going into the amp or pedal.
Study the output of the pickup:
The ‘high output' pickups drive the tube amp stronger to get a distorted sound. If you have a guitar amp without this tubes, then this ‘high output' effect is lost. The ‘vintage' style pickups are low to medium output. You tend to get more definition by using these pickups due to the fact that they are not built to drive an amp hard.
In summary, whether you are going to purchase an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar it is always advisable that you research thoroughly. Speak with the sales persons of guitar shops and test every guitar you like to buy. Browse the internet to decipher between the different manufacturers and models available until you are certain you have found the electric guitar of your dreams and then buy it.

What is it called for guitar amp pedal / footswitch?
A family member who is learning electric guitar has a 25 watt yamaha amp. We want to be able to turn the amp on and off with our foot instead of hand. We don't need anything fancy. Could you tell me what I would search for on ebay or musiciansfriend? I'm not sure what words I should use for this type thing. What is this device called?
Also, do the distortion pedals have an on / off switch? Should I just buy a distortion pedal or is the on/ off switch sold separately? I don't want anything fancy right now. Just the basics.
Thank you.
Do distortion pedals just turn on the distortion or do they turn the amp on and off?
We are learning guitar from a DVD lesson, but we have to keep the amp away from the TV so it won't damage TV w/ magnetism, and also away from dimming lights, which make the amp "sing". So we need a foot switch because am will be out of easy reach while we watch lessons on TV. Thank you.
For turning the amp on with your foot, im not sure.
Distortion pedals have buttons that you click on with your foot.
