Another question for guitarists.. No.5?
What are the best boss pedals to go for when trying to create your signature sound? I have created some nice sounds on my GT-8 but now I want to go for single analogue pedals and I'm not sure which ones to get. I know I will need a chorus, distortion/overdrive and a delay, but which ones?? I like the Wish you were Here by Incubus sound, and Run like hell by Pink Floyd, both great noises.
Well, since it's YOUR "signature sound", i can't suggest exactly what you should get, but i could set my own gear as an example and maybe you could get some ideas from it.
First off, i suggest you also try out some other brands other than boss for more variety.
Distortion and Overdrive- I use a modded Boss DS-1 for my main drive pedal. I like the grit and gain of this pedal. I'm into classic rock and i love a lot of gain, so this pedal is the foundation of my sound. For my overdrive, i use either a DOD Classic Tube or DOD 250 preamp Overdrive. The classic tube provides the warmth and tones down the DS-1 to give a more warm and smooth tone. The DOD250 is pure grit, hands down, but not good as a stand alone pedal. This pedal plus the DS-1 is what i call systematic chaos. haha. By the way, the purpose of the overdrives is for boost, since we are two guitarists in my band, so when we duel with solos, we use our ODs for boost. This combination creates "my signature sound".
Delay- im not really fond of the delay pedals of Boss. I would suggest Digitech. Based on experience and other people's suggestions, Digitech has one of the best delay sounds. Also, check out the Boston Delay. It's a very cheap brand, but i like their delay pedal. It also has a reverse effect that sounds weird and cool at the same time. hehe
Chorus- I don't really use choruses, so i can't really help you out here. But check out the Boss Chorus, i heard it's decent.
Those are the three effects you mentioned, so that's what i'll suggest. Try getting a flanger or phaser for more effects too.
And remember to experiment. That's what the knobs on the pedals are for. Tweak your pedals in order to get the signature sound you would want.
good luck and hope that helps!
