How does one read circuitry schematics?
I have these schematic charts right here-
http://www.schematicheaven.com/effects/eh_mufffuzz.pdf
http://www.schematicheaven.com/effects/mxr_dist_plus.pdf
-and I'm having a hard time trying to understand them. I mean, I know what the parts and components are, but as far as how they are all arranged on a circuit board, I'm clueless. I've looked on several websites, but they all seem dedicated rather to identify what each symbol means instead of where they go on the circuit board in respect to the rest of the components. Could anyone explain how to put these parts on a circuit board properly or just put a link up to a website that would explain it?
Also- as far as the second schematic goes, I've read that if you use smaller resistors (?), you will be able to make a more distorted sound. Is that true? And, if so, how could it be applied?
Unfortunately, the arrangement of the parts on the board usually has very little if any correlation to the schematic diagram. The schematic is laid out to make it easy for a person to understand the flow of the circuit. The circuit board is laid out to make best use of the space and connections to minimize the size. To find out where each device is on the board can require a parts placement diagram. This diagram shows the location of each part and identifies it with the label used in the schematic. A location diagram can be essential for complicated circuits.
As far as the sound effect from the second circuit, the diodes D1 and D2 will create different sound effects. There's a note in the upper right hand corner that explains this. Changing some of the resistors would only change the sound by over-driving the amps to cause distortion. The different diodes create different effects by changing the clipping level of the signal as it comes out of the first IC. This is a better method of control.
