Shadow Boxes And Custom Picture Frames
Many customers come into a custom picture framing store searching for the perfect moulding, mat and glass for their artwork, images, and photos. Unfortunately, many customers do not realize, that frames can now be used to display many more things than just posters and paintings. Customers now have the option to frame just about anything, as long as it fits within the depth of the frame that they choose. Such projects are often referred to as shadow boxes. With shadow boxes, custom picture frames are used to display a three-dimensional item that does not lie flat in the back of the frame, as it would with a typical poster or painting.
Professional framing stores have worked on everything from t-shirts and jerseys to medals and sports memorabilia. Many customers like to display signed jerseys or clothing with sentimental value. In these cases, we go over with the customer how they want the item to be displayed; whether it should hang full length or be folded, and whether they want the clothing stretched all the way to the edge of the frame, or if they want it floating on top of a mat. In nearly all cases, customers add a mat to the frame, allowing their piece to be set on top with the mat revealed in the background. Once the display appearance is decided on, the custom picture frames staff stitches the item into place on the mat board, hiding all stitch work so the details cannot be seen. The end product is a beautifully framed wall piece that displays a customer's favorite or important clothing items.
With harder surfaced items, such as medals, coins, or other three-dimensional objects, the piece cannot be stitched. Instead, the item is fixed in place through the use of adhesives. Because such items generally are not the depth or shape of the custom picture framing, a mat is required to provide a background on which the piece can be displayed. Shadow boxes also afford you the option of being able to have windows cut into a mat, using spacers to place it above the depth of the item. This creates more of a window effect, leaving only the black or white foam core backing, or perhaps a second mat, to serve as the background.
When purchasing custom picture frames, you can also mix and match the items being displayed. Sometimes you may want a diploma or award framed which, like any other art, is two dimensional and could fit in any type of frame. But, if you have a pin, medal, or other three-dimensional object that you would like framed with that important document, it will add an extra component to the project. The document might be shown through a window cut into a mat, allowing enough space to then float the three-dimensional object on top of that same mat within the same frame. Or perhaps you will opt to chose a solution which overlaps the objects, allowing the three-dimensional piece to rest on top of the document.
