Casio PX-830 versus Roland F-110 - Digital Piano Comparison
The Casio PX-830 and Roland F-110 digital pianos go face to face with each other in the very competitive compact digital piano market. These two keyboards both stand out with their ultra-modern cabinet design, which bear more than just a passing resemblance to each other. So are the similarities just skin deep? In this article I set out to explain some of the similarities and differences between these digital pianos allowing a prospective purchaser to make a more informed buying decision.
Keyboard
As you would expect both these pianos have an 88 note keyboard in line with a standard modern piano. The PX-830's keys have 3 sensor scaled hammer action ivory touch keys. The F-110 has progressive hammer action keys with what Roland calls "PHA alpha II". Both keyboards are able to realistically recreate the touch and feel of an acoustic piano. There are some reports of sticky keys on the Casio but this may just be down to a faulty batch.
Sound
This is where there are some major differences. Firstly the PX-830 has 16 onboard tones whereas the F-110 has a whopping 306 tones, although many of these would be considered superfluous by many purists. The PX-830 has 4 digital samples per tone giving rise to added expression and feel.
Secondly the PX-830 has a 2x 20W loudspeaker system whereas the F-110 only has 2x 12W speakers. With the F-110, this means when you turn the volume up then the sound can start to distort. This depends on which particular patch you are using and how hard you are playing the keys, but it can come as a disappointment to many people.
Features and Facilities
Both keyboards have Layer, Split and Duet facilities, and three footpedals with half damper operation. Both have onboard songs for you to practice and play along to (60 songs on PX-830; 65 on F-110) and when you are ready you can put together your own compositions and record them to the sequencer (2 tracks on PX-830; 3 on F-110).
The PX-830 has both reverb and chorus digital effects available whereas the F-110 only has reverb. The PX-830 relies on USB for external connectivity whereas the F-110 uses MIDI. An added feature of the PX-830 is the SD card reader. This means you can download/upload files using this popular medium.
Build and Construction
Both these digital pianos are extremely well made and look very sleek with their contemporary minimalist design. However, there are different options depending on model. The PX-830 is available in either Black or a Polished Black finish. The F-110 has slightly more options being available in either Black or White, and also Polished Back or Polished White. Additionally and hot off the press, the F-110 is now also available in a very striking Polished Red finish.
Conclusion
As stated earlier, the physical appearance of these digital pianos is very similar. Both look stunning and are sure to add a touch of class to your living room or home. And both provide a realistic piano playing experience with their quality keyboards and onboard digital piano tones.
Your choice will obviously depend on your own needs. The F-110 has many more tones available, and a few more songs. The PX-830 has a better speaker system and an SD card reader. Possibly the clincher for you might be the colour options and this is where the F-110 wins with several more finish types available.

9VAC power supply question?
I lost the OEM power supply for my Alesis Midiverb digital reverb guitar effects unit; The manual says the power supply needs to be 9 volts AC, at 5 VoltAmps. Most power supplies are rated by milliamps.
How do I find the right one, so it won't toast my reverb??

yeah - what Del says - just to be clear - you won't toast ANYTHING with extra amps (that's what he means when he says your pedal will only take what it needs)- you just have to match the voltage. personally i would go for a much higher amp rated power supply - having plenty of power on tap can improve sound quality - the same thing can be said for voltage(i run my amps which are rated12 volt at about 14, for example) but i wouldn't risk it with an expensive bit of kit. get a 9 volt supply, ok? but you can go mad on the amperage and it will be perfectly safe!!!
