Power Crisis in Pakistan - Important Suggestions
Energy conservation has been a big issue in Pakistan during present crisis of power shortfall. The ill planning and lack of foreseeing capabilities of our leaders plus the political reasons that stopped key dams from being constructed, aggravated the power shortage that created huge crisis and the nation is now paying the heavy price.
The recent statement by the Federal Minister for Water and Power, Raja Pervez Ashraf, outlined the measures to conserve electricity by reducing working days, early closure of markets and marriage halls etc. These measures can be called arbitrary as they are not based on any sort of planning or calculations. People would only join hands with the Government if they would see a clear reduction in lavish life standards of our Politicians. It is ironic that we hardly see any act of realization of situation from our leaders but they have pulled out every drop of blood from the weakened body of the nation in the name of sacrifice. It is disappointing to see that every time only the nation sacrifices but not the leaders.
This is a hopeless situation when Industries are shutting down and people are burning the effigies of the leaders on the streets as they are becoming jobless due to irresponsibility of this Government. In this hopeless and helpless situation, I want to render few suggestions which would definitely put a great impact on our present demand of Power & Electricity in our country.
1. The appliances for lighter use may now be made mandatory to be used with 12 volts input. Today many appliances including fans, bulbs, laptops, televisions are used with 12 volts input and that can reduce the electricity demand by 70%. Following links and many like this can be researched to obtain feasibility of appliances that can be introduced in our country to reduce the power crisis.
Pedal power is the transfer of energy from a human source through the use of a foot pedal and crank system. This technology is most commonly used for transportation and has been used to propel bicycles for over a hundred years. Less commonly pedal power is used to power agricultural and hand tools and even to generate electricity.
Some applications include pedal powered laptops, pedal powered grinders and pedal powered water wells. Some third world development projects currently transform used bicycles into pedal powered tools for sustainable development.
If our Government looks into this option, we have brains that can introduce new technology which can provide 12 volts power outputs in our homes with minor expenses with some necessary alterations.
This option of 12 volts output would be ideally applicable for villages, remote areas and many more places where high voltage is not a compulsory requirement.
2. Even in the developed countries alternate methods are being used to produce environment friendly and also the manually produced electricity. The recent introduction of the Stationary Bicycle Paddle Generators created a breakthrough in the production of most effective and easy source of electricity. I believe that if proper research is done and this technology is converted into a large scale facility involving human labor to produce electricity, then we would be able to create many jobs for majority of our poor masses. This is just an initial idea which needs proper cropping for implementation.
I strongly believe that if this technology is introduced in Pakistan, we would be able to meet the shortfall in our demand for electricity.
3 Today there is a need to adopt the latest environment friendly technology like Wind Power, Solar Energy and Sea Turbines. We have a long coast and have ideal capacity to achieve power generation through Sea Turbines. This technology reduces the dependence on fuel and gas which always produces costly energy that later on proves unbearable for the consumers.
In conclusion I would like to emphasize that when we have very potential options available to produce energy with extremely nominal cost, then jumping towards conventional and costly fuel based energy is not a wisest step to be taken. I am deeply shocked by the attitude of our Prime Minister and our Federal Minister for Water and Power who displayed no intention to welcome cheap energy offered byChina and Iran. We all know that our nation is passing through deep economic crisis but our leaders are more interested in fetching gold from the present power crisis. It is painful that the acts of our leaders always disappoint us as they openly display their thirst to achieve kickbacks, commissions and hidden gains out of the miseries of the common people.
I want all the readers to comment and give suggestions for the implementation of the alternate source of energy mentioned in this article. Those interested people and entrepreneurs who can prepare the feasibility for the implementation of 12 volts power system especially in rural areas of Pakistan.
Our nation should keep the pressure intact on our opportunist leaders who have no sympathy to the nation but are interested in filling their vaults and gathering wealth as much as they can.
