Is it safe to dismantle a power supply unit myself?
I have a 12 volt power supply unit (psu) for a guitar effects pedal but the connection is dodgy and it keeps cutting out. Will it be safe for me to unplug it from the wall and dismantle it myself to see if I gan repair it?
Chances are there is a cord that has become loose and needs to be resoldered or a connector has been strained and needs to be replaced. Try replacing the connector first, if that does not do the trick then open up the supply and look closely at the connections to your cords.
There are currently 2 types of power supplies on the market: The "linear" type that have a 50-60 Hz step-down transformer and the "switching" type that rectifies, filters and chops the line voltage before going being sent to a small, ~40KHz step-down transformer.
If yours is the linear type you can safely open and service it once unplugged without worry that you will be shocked by any capacitors. BUT, if it is the switching type you must be VERY careful as the line input cap stores up to about 170 volts for countries that use 120 VAC and about 340 volts for countries that use 240 VAC.
You may be asking yourself, how can a capacitor charge up to a higher voltage than the line? Because your household A.C. voltage is a sine wave going positive and then negative (hence, "alternating current"), someone had to come up with a decent way to measure and post it's value.
It was decided the best way was to express it as what the D.C. equivalent value would be, as, D.C. is stable and is commonly used as a reference. A.C. voltage measured by an RMS meter will give its D.C. equivalent value. But the actual waveform of the A.C. voltage will exceed this value by a factor of 1.414. So take 120 VAC (RMS) and multiply it by 1.414 and you will get a peak voltage of 170 volts, which is the approximate voltage the input capacitor will charge up to in the U.S.A, Canada and other countries using 120 VAC.
It most likely won't be a fuse, as you said the unit works and then cuts out. Fuses are either OK or they are blown, they are pretty much never intermittent.
