what is the diffrence between a signal attenuator and a boost pedal (for guitar)?

The boost pedal is to boost your signal going into the amp. (Rather appropriate name for it, don't you think).
The attenuator is sort of like a volume to lower the volume of your guitar. Take a look at this link to an eBay auction. It has a good description of what a signal attenuator does. By the way the description is hard to read, blue letters on dark blue background. If you highlight it with your mouse, you can turn the letters to white and read them.
