Will a fuzz box, overdrive, distortion and a wah pedal designed for a 6 string guitar work for bass?
all the pedals i find for 6 strings are like 30-60 but the ones i find that are the for bass guitars are over 100 dollars. will a 6 string effects box work for a bass?
The answer is "sometimes". It depends on the design of the pedal, the instrument you're plugging into it, the amp you're driving, and the sound you're going after.
Some fuzz and distortion pedals cut a lot of the low bass out of the signal. If you're playing with a very midrange heavy tone (like Lemmy), then you probably wouldn't notice it. If you like a lot of bass in your tone, you will.
I know a lot of bass players that use the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi fuzz (for guitar) on their bass and they're happy with it. That particular fuzz has a lot of low end to it. So for fuzz and distortion, you just have to try 'em out.
Wah...that's another story. That's a filtering effect, and wah pedals are tuned for a specific frequency range. A guitar wah is probably going to be about an octave too high to really work on bass. But again, try it.
A final thought...some bassists (myself included) play through two amp rigs. I'll play through a bass amp and keep that clean and free of effects, and will send a clean DI to the sound board. I'll also play through a guitar rig with all of my effects in line with it (and take a lot of the bass out of that signal). That way my low end remains intact, and I can still have my effects on top. That's most useful in a trio situation. With 2 guitars or keys in the band, I usually won't do that.
Good luck.
