Guitar tone help Please!!!?
I have been having a lot of trouble trying to find the perfect guitar tone for awhile. I'm looking for a think full and heavy post-hardcore rock/metal tone. Something like a Senses Fail guitar tone as an example. Something that has a distinct high end so I can noodle a bit, but a thick enough middle and low end so i can chug on rhythm guitar too. I currently have a Crate GFX-212 with a cry baby 535q wah pedal, a digitech 300a artist pedalboard, and a digitech hot head distortion pedal. And as for my Guitar, i have a Schecter Diamond Series Hellraiser. If anyone could tell me what is wrong with my setup, and what i should change/get rid of/add/purchase to get to my goal sound, it would be much appreciated. I do have a budget so keep that in mind, I am only an 18 year old with a minimum wage part time job, so like $600 is my limit being a little flexible though. Thank you for all comments! I appreciate any help!
Hello there,
I don't recall every meeting a guitar player who was not in search of the perfect tone. You gear rig is not all that bad. It is better than most on here who ask for help. Generally they are trying to get that tone out of a small practice amp. Crate amps are not my favorites, but they are decent amps. The FGX-212 should get the job done for you. Nothing wrong with your guitar either. I have played a Cry Baby for years. You have a much newer model, but I am confident it is fine. Where I have some doubts are the Digitech pedals. No offense, but I have always thought of Digitech has being pretty crappy pedals. I even like some old Danelectro better. But there are a lot of Digitech pedals sold, so they must be decent.
Since you gear rig is not all that bad, let's talk about how to get the most out of it. With the GFX212, effects pedals don't work too well in the gain channels. Try using them with the clean. You have a better chance of dialing in a tone you want by playing them through the clean channel. So, if you have been using them through the gain channels, give the clean channel a try. Try setting your amp to Bass 7 Mid 5 and Treble 7 Channel Volume 6 (use the master volume to control how loud you are overall) to sort of scoop the mids. Leave the reverb off. Try that setting in your clean channel. Leave the gain off, it probably does not effect the clean channel, but just in case, leave it off. If that clean setting sounds decent to you, then plug in your effects pedals and give them a spin.
You should be able to get a decent tone from your gear rig. Maybe not exactly like Senses Fail, but still decent.
Perhaps it is time to start saving up for a tube amp. I also really like the Jet City amp and have recommended it to others. However, the 20 watt head maybe too small for what you need. It is a fine tube amp for playing at home alone. The larger head is going to run a little more than what you have to spend when you factor in getting a good speaker cab. So start having up for the point when you can graduate up to a tube amp. But in the meantime, I think you can get an acceptable sound out of your gear rig. It really is not that bad.
One thing to do is watch craigslist, ebay, your local want ads for a bargain priced good tube amp. A Fender Twin Reverb, Marshall JCM or the like are rarely if ever sell at bargain prices. But there are decent sounding tube amps that do. I recently bought a Traynor 40 watt 1x12 combo amp for around $100 off eBay. There was no one seriously bidding and that amp (which cost $650 to $700 new) sold dirt cheap. It is a great amp. I saw a 100 watt B-52 tube head sell for under $200 a while back. So it does happen.
