if you have a mesa boogie do you really need a solid state ibanez tube screamer to saturate the tone?
im debating on if i should get one for my 100 watt head.
Well, there's a reason why guitarists boost their signal into a tube amp, especially one with high wattage - it's all about headroom and saturation, it's the best way to get a lot of gain at low volumes.
As something I'm sure you're very familiar with, 100w tube amps get loud very very fast... but they don't tend to sound really good until they're cranked! It's all about really pushing those tubes - with a normal guitar input, the tubes don't get pushed until you start to turn up the volume, which usually puts you to a level far too loud to use reasonably on a stage.
Since gain operates on the "more in, more out" principle, if you hit a tube amp with more signal, you'll get more crunch out.... so really, anything that helps you hit the input of the amp with a bigger signal is fair game.
In fact, I would normally *not* choose the tube screamer. I wouldn't take it off the table a priori, but it wouldn't be my first choice...
I normally have onboard preamps in my guitars or active pickups, so right there that's more output. EQ pedals, wah pedals, and various and sundry distortion pedals are all options (I've actually used wah pedals lately, at least for solo boosts).
Any distortion pedal that can clean up pretty well is an option - Kurt Cobain used a DS-1 (well, more or less), Randy Rhoads used an MXR Distortion+, etc.
You aren't limited to amps for this - Dimebag Darrell used two MXR 10-band EQ's, one before and one after his distortion, for instance.
The important part to remember here is that *mids* is what saturates an amp in the way that we like. Do *not* cut your mids in front of your tube amp or distortion pedal... *boost* before, *cut* after. If it's good enough for Dimebag, etc.
Off the top of my head, a couple of pedals that I would consider are the Voodoo Sparkledrive, Zakk Wylde Overdrive, any number of Boss pedals (SD-1, DS-1, BD-1, OS-2, GE-7, etc etc).
Of course, as I mentioned earlier, getting some relatively hot bridge pickups (my current fav is a Seymour Duncan Alternative
and an onboard preamp (or using active pickups), helps achieve a better tone in general and especially in terms of distortion.
