What guitar amp should I get?
I need a new guitar amp. I have a micro spider... it was my first. But the sound sucks. I play rock blues and alternative Christian music. I need something that can be heard over drums but doesn't have to be too loud because I usually run a line out into the pa system. Any help would be great. Thanks.
Hello there,
First a comment about what you are doing with your present amp. Running it through the PA by way of the line out jack is not the best way to go. That tends to give you a bad sound. Try mic'ing the amp and run that through the PA. It should improve the sound. The problem you have with your amp is the speaker. Those tiny speakers tend to make you sound thin and tinny. You only sound as good as you speakers no matter what guitar you are playing.
You think the sound sucks on your present amp. That is probably because of the speaker used in that. Line 6 is no different than the other brands. They use a lousy small speaker in the small practice amps.
In your next amp look for a 1x12 combo. A combo is where the amplifier and speaker are in the same cabinet. 1x12 means it has one 12 inch speaker. The 12 inch speaker will give you a richer fuller sound than you can give from the small speaker in a practice amp. You are going to need at least 30 watts of power to be heard over the drums. But that is not a problem because 1x12 generally start at 30 watts and go up from there. Fender, Vox, Marshall, Peavey, Crate and Line 6 all make good 1x12s. I have never heard a lousy speaker in a 1x12 from any of those brands. You can find 1x12s used that sell for no more than a new small practice amp. The 12 inch speaker will sound so much better. I do sometimes see 2x12 combos sell used for less than $200.
If I had to recommend a single amp for a newer player, I would suggest the Line 6 Spider 30 watt 1x12 combo. It is easy to use (no harder than your micro Spider). It has some basic built in effects such as reverb, delay, distortion and chorus so that may eliminate the need for some pedals. The 12 inch Celestion speaker has a good tone. It is not expensive and the amp seems to be readily available used.
If you happen to find one of the 75 watt Spiders, you probably would not need to mic that amp. They are pretty loud.
