What is the best guitar distortion pedal for me to get classic rock to metal?
I want a distortion pedal that can take me from AC/DC to Avenged Sevenfold. It obviously needs to be versatile and have alot of gain on tap to go from Classic Rock to Metal. What pedal do you think is good for that? Please don't suggest modeling pedals, or say go to the store and try it out. By the way this isn't my first pedal so you don't need to suggest a Boss DS-2. Thank you. I was looking at the Jekyll and Hyde, MXR Custom Badass, Digitech TL2, Blackstar Dual ... Do you have any opinions on them?
I have the Blackstar HT-Dual and recommend it. It specifically does classic rock to metal with ease. It doesn't sound like a regular transistor distortion pedal, but a tube preamp ... which it is, just in pedal form. The other non-tube pedals I think sound too inorganic, non-genuine, kind of like using an amp sim. I figure, why not get real 300V tube distortion if you can. Maybe even replace the tube with a Tung Sol. Digital / transistor pedals often require a good tube amp to sound good, whereas the HT-Dual sounds good even through a crappy transistor amp.
Also, with the dual channel, you can have the first set to classic rock crunch, and the second to higher gain metal, and switch between them with the stomp of a button. I've also run it straight into my audio interface, through some cab impulses, and via dual or quad tracking gotten an excellent heavy tone. You asked for the best, and that's the best one I've ever tried, and it does everything you're asking for.
TIP: If you ever have scratchy pots, put in a drop of Deoxit Faderlube, twist the knob back and forth several times, and it should be like new again.
