is there a pedal that has more distortion than the MXR FULLBORE METAL?
i am not looking for a cliche metallica tone , im looking more for a modern metal Children of Bodom tone ? I came pretty close with the MXR but i am thinking if there is another pedal out there can has capability of producing laihos sound or more. are the distortions on the Boss ME 25 and ME 70 that digitally at high volumes or recommend a pedal alone that surpasses the Fullbore Metal which had a built in noise gate and mid frequency knob?
I've not been happy with any of the high-gain distorted tones I've gotten from any multifx pedal, no matter the volume.
First off, if you need a noise gate you're either using too much gain or you need to go back through your rig and figure out where it's coming from. Is your guitar properly shielded and grounded? Are you getting noise from your computer, lights, noisy power? All of that stuff can, and should, be addressed before adding more gear to your signal chain.
As far as pedals that actually have a mids control, the first one that comes to mind is the Boss Metal Zone. I've used mine for years when I haven't had access to a full amp, or had to record straight in to the computer. The basic tone of the pedal itself is rather "80's metal", but having that parametric mid control makes it one of the most versatile metal pedals I've ever played. Stock, it can go from thrash (early Metallica) to all kinds of death/black metal. After doing a few mods to it, my appreciation for it has only grown - I'm getting the most "amp-like" tone I've ever gotten with just pedals.
But hey, once you start talking about high-gain, it's all about EQ. Put an EQ pedal before and after your distortion pedal and tweak away - you should be able to get all kinds of tone out of it. Hey, Dimebag did it!
Post-distortion EQ is key, though, which is one of the reasons why I like the Metal Zone so much. Having that built in post-dist EQ makes it easy, and means I can use my EQ for other stuff (or leave it out entirely - I don't want to lug a rackmount EQ around everywhere).
