Which guitar pedal should I get first? EQ or overdrive?
I've been looking at an MXR M-108 10-band EQ pedal and a Blackstar HT-Drive overdrive pedal. I play metal and right now I need a little more gain to get the tone I want. I've heard the EQ pedal give a little bit of boost and It's great for tone shaping, maybe that's all I need. What do you think?
The EQ pedal will do what you're looking for, which is shape the sound AND provide the gain boost. It has a gain slider on the right. It's the cheaper of the two options.
The HT Drive, well it's not just a gain booster but a tube pedal. It'll add tube richness to your sound while providing limited shaping via the tone control, and also allow for simple boost to overdrive to distortion depending on the gain/level.
So the EQ pedal will be a "yup does what I need" kind of thing, the HT Drive will be a "oooh that sounds so good" kind of thing.
It's a tough call on which of the two to get, or which to get first. An EQ is always valuable, and can be used even if you get the Drive later. Maybe just get the EQ and see if it does the job, and if so then you can save some cash in not having to get the Drive.
