Why does my guitar pedal clip so easily?
I have a Fender Starcaster guitar effect pedal - a chorus. My chorus pedal clips (overdrives) when I strum. I did have a 9.6 volt power supply powering the chorus pedal for months before I got the correct 9 volt power supply for it. The 9.6v power supply had the correct ma and polarity and everything, it was just .6v more powerful. Since it's an analog pedal, did the extra .6 volts damage the circuitry?
Doubtful.
Most of those pedals are going to regulate the input voltage down to 5 volts internally anyway.
Think about it, if you ran the pedal on a 9V battery, it's not going to stay at 9 volts for very long.
If you back down the volume on the guitar slightly, does the chorus clean up? If so, your chorus pedal is just not able to accept a very hot signal. No fix for that other than:
- Lower the pickups on your guitar to reduce the output
- Get a better chorus pedal
Good luck.
