Bare Foot Running: Natural or Idiotic?

Bare foot running isn't exactly new, but with so many people jumping on the bandwagon lately, it sure is trendy. It may be a sign of the times - athletes finding a way to rebel against all the high tech interventions into sports in the form of athletic gear, training equipment and even performance enhancing drugs...

Or it could be that bare foot running is just finally being recognized as a viable alternative to (quote unqote) "traditional" running in supportive, padded running shoes.

In this brief article, I'm going to address the question - does bare foot running live up to the hype - or is it (as some doctors and many a shoe salesman insist) a dangerous and idiotic activity?

First, let's weigh the pros:

If you believe the bare foot running hype (and full disclosure, I do buy that hype personally) then you may be swayed by promises of reduced joint pain, stronger feet and legs, a more stable gait - resistance to injury and better posture...

If you don't believe the bare foot running hoop-la, then you may have been swayed by the insistence of podiatrists and shoe salesmen who insist that our bodies are not equipped to handle the stresses of bare foot running.

Ultimately, you've got to make the decision for yourself about what you believe. Both sides have impressive evidence to support their assertions about bare foot running. The bare foot running fans will tell you about how they personally have benefitted from bare foot running. I for one, have found it to be much easier on my knees, and much more fun than running in clunky "running" shoes.

And the doctors and shoe salesmen will invariably point to the rise in bare foot running related accidents since it became popular - but there's one reason I tend to look at those statistics as misleading...

I mean, if all of a sudden hang gliding was all the rage, I think I'd expect hang gliding injuries to rise sharply as well - and that doesn't mean hang gliding got MORE dangerous, just that it got more popular.

Bare foot running sure has gotten popular, so I think it's normal to see a lot of injuries - especially when you take into account the fact that people new to bare foot running aren't all going to know HOW to avoid injury in the first place.

Oddly enough, for a more natural style of running, proper bare foot running form doesn't come easy to everyone.

There are dozens of ways you can injure yourself if you're not prepared. That's why I urge anyone I meet who's getting into bare foot running to download the special "bare foot running survival kit" report on the next page:
