Faking It, or the Real McCoy?
When it comes to modern furniture designer, it seems to have divided us: There are those who like the have reproduction and those who could not bear to have something other than the actual treatment.
It is certainly a controversial topic and one that been an ongoing debate about my career as a journalist interiors.
Just like in fashion, there are those who never heard of carrying a fake Prada handbag would dream and those who are happy to turn a blind eye to dodgy seams and double "L" in Milan.
For the record, I am firmly in the camp real deal. Much like I would not have a copied handbag, it seems a sacrilege to me have a Louis Ghost chair without a label cartel.
As such, my home is filled with designer furniture and in fact the only piece I mentioned above, even ghost chair.
For not well informed, it seems snobbish, but for me and many others, it means much more than that.
Many people ask why, with four chairs for the price by a fine and not think the people who would spend a month payments on a piece of designer furniture you need to be removed in a straitjacket.
I do not agree, however. The Eames lounger has long been the object of my affection. Every time when I go to Liberty in London, I honor this beautiful art piece design.
Unfortunately, there is a high price, this beautiful chair remains firmly out of reach for now at least.
Sure I could bag me a lot more affordable Copy and many would wonder why I did not do that, but just would not be the same for me. I would know that I was not even the real deal. While I am sure I would'm perfectly comfortable on it, I would eye with suspicion every time our paths crossed.
And as with Charles and Ray Eames the design team I most admire, I feel like I would do a disservice to them was. It would be like throwing those years of thoughtful design in back their faces, as if all blood, sweat and tears (and prototypes) did not matter one iota.
Of course, if it, or pretend to the genuine article, it is not just down to personal choice. There is a very real argument that design should be protected and maintains designers. What is the purpose of implementing all the hard work in a design just for someone to come along, and the use of inferior materials and produce something for a fifth of the price.
I meet many new and established designers in the course of my work and the one thing they all live in fear of being copied before. You spend ages perfecting their designs only for some unscrupulous main street big wigs come and pluck them from selling similar designs for a fraction of the price. That's why they spend vs. Steal in magazines, I always feel a little off color. I saw one the other day, a pillow was the object in question: one of a much-acclaimed creator of the embroidered pillows that other one-carbon rip off, sorry to copy.
Of course, I do not know how the designer, but I felt safe to reach for the phone ACID . call
