Planting Good Seeds in Your Soil and in Your Soul

It's Spring! It is time for renewal.

Nature does it automatically.

People sometimes need a push to renew.

On your way to a Spirit of Well-Being, find a way to renew yourself.

To make a garden you have to prepare the soil, plant the seeds and tend the garden area until the seeds produce what they were ment to produce.

To get closer to a spirit of well-being in your life you have to prepare yourself (declutter, organize, prioritize), plant seeds (listening to, reading, and studying uplifting words) and tend to yourself (eating healthy, exercise, rest, meditation time) until you get positive results in your life.

Planning a new garden can be a great deal of fun. The opportunity to grow something real can be very appealing. But anyone who has gardened for long has learned the necessity of accommodating nature and has developed a sense of humility in the process. The hardest thing to convince new gardeners of is the need for patience. With the first warm day of spring they are eager to begin planting and nothing can stop them. Many of these bursts of enthusiasm yield ill-conceived gardens doomed to failure. The plants wither and the would-be gardeners become convinced that they lack some secret knowledge or inherent skill. In most of these cases, however, a few hours of planning and preparation would have made all the difference. It is quite easy to dig up a plot and throw some plants in the ground. It is another thing entirely to create a healthy, growing, living garden.

In Jesus' story (Matthew 13: 23a), the Word of God is the seed, and we are the soil. Often, when we come to church, the preacher is preaching the Word, but we aren't really paying attention. Perhaps we are thinking about what we are going to do that afternoon or about what we did yesterday. We are hearing the Word, but we are not listening. That is like throwing seed on the top of the ground. It won't ever grow into anything in our life.

There are other times when we hear the Word and we get excited about it, but then our excitement fades and we drift away. That is like the seeds that fall on the rocky ground. The plants spring up, but then die because the roots are too shallow.

Sometimes we hear the Word and we believe what it says, but we want to keep on doing the same things we have been doing. That is like planting the seed in with a bunch of weeds. I can tell you what will happen, the weeds will soon take over!

When we hear the word, and we listen and try to understand what it says and put it into practice in our daily life, then we are like good soil. We are like soil where the seed takes root and grows and produces a plentiful harvest.

That is the kind of soil that Jesus wants us to be.

Now lets get back to the earth garden:

Find a spot in your yard that gets both sun and shade. Ideally, some parts of it should get full sun (6 hours of continuous sunshine per day), and some parts should get partial sun (either dappled sun, or full sun for less than 6 hours per day).

Even if parts of your garden are in total shade, there are a variety of plants (including foliage plants and even flowers) that can flourish.

Prepare the soil. Dig and churn up all of the packed dirt about 2 feet down.

Add compost and mix it into your dirt or build a box and fill it with good soil .

Buy seeds.

Seeds are very inexpensive at your local dollar market. Alternately, you can start with bedding plants (or seedlings).

Plant seeds.

Read the instructions on the back of the seed package, or on the plastic tag in your plant pot. You may have to ask experts when to plant them if it does not say on the back.

Plant bedding plants when you are sure you can. Some seeds (such as tomatoes) should be started indoors, in small pots or seed trays, before the last frost, and only transplanted outdoors when the weather warms up.

Water your plants every other day. Don't drown them in water.

Watch, weed, wait, water, watch, weed, wait...Until one day a few weeks from when you planted you will get to harvest the fruits of your labor.

Enjoy the fresh veggies or flowers. Whatever you planted will come up.

Remember that. It is the same with your life.

Now back to you:

Whatever choices you make, how you see life, how you treat people, all those things determine what you will get out of life.

Make sure you are putting good things in.

Plant good seeds in your soul garden.

Make positive choices.

Tend your soul garden as carefully as you tend your earth garden.

Remember:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." (Galatians Chapter 5, verses 22-23)

Why is releasing white doves at a funeral considered closure?

I went to my Great Uncle's Funeral on December 20,2008. He was in WWII(Navy). And they gave his flag that was on top of his casket to his wife. And then the preacher asked us to step out from under the tent. And then they released two said this verse from the bible and then released the 3rd one. I know it was something like 2 are angels to take his soul to heaven. I know its supposed to symbolize closure. But why?

Biblically, the Dove has always been a symbol of peace and purity. When Jesus was baptized, a Dove landed on his shoulder and that was to signify the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Releasing Doves at funerals is symbolic of the Holy Spirit taking the deceased's soul to heaven. It's a symbolic closure that when the soul is with God, it is at peace.......which brings comfort to the deceased knowing their loved one is in a better place. It's a spiritual closure but it doesn't bring absolute closure to the loss of someone you love. That kind of closure takes time.
