How can u get a good sound with effects ( without the squealing ) from a 100wtt amp if you...?
...dont have an effects loop?
i bought a Fender FM 212 DSP and i love it but i also got an effects stomp box from electro harmonix. i went to plug it in and when i did and turned on the distortion with both the stomp box and footswitch in, it made a loud squealing buzzy sound...... i asked my insructor and he said it was because i didnt have an effects loop built in to my guitar. Is there anyway to keep that horrible noise from coming out of my amp and still have good effects and a footswitch plugged in???
Sounds like your first shot combining the EH and the built-in DSP introduced too much gain into the equation. Having worked with many great guitar players over the years, I’ve picked up a few tips that might help:
1) First of all, your amp does have both a preamp out and a power amp in - so you could use this as an "ad hoc, unlabeled" effects loop by taking the preamp out --> EH in and EH out --> power amp in. Try this with both preamp and master volume at zero, then gradually and slowly increase preamp to about 3-4, then power amp in small steps, to see what kind of tone you get.
2) After that, I’m assuming your signal chain is guitar --> EH stompbox --> amp. First try playing everything clean (i.e, EH disabled, no DSP effects on the amp active) to get a good sense of a clean baseline tone.
3) Then activate the EH stompbox, but keep the amp clean. This will enable you to work with the settings on the EH at a moderate level, not overloading the amp’s preamp section. You’ll get a better sense of what the EH is capable of, as well as its limitations in terms of tone, as well as what kind of gain the EH puts out when you go dirty with it.
4) Only then should you start experimenting with gain structures on the amp (i.e., no DSP distortion active, just using higher preamp settings relative to master volume to combine both distortions - the EH and the amp).
5) Finally, start messing with the amp’s internal DSP settings to see what the combination will do.
By going methodically step-by-step, you’ll begin to both isolate the source of the unwanted gain, as well as get a better sense of the capabilities/limitations, gain structures and timbral signatures of the EH in isolation as well as the amp. There is some truth to your instructor’s comment that a true effects loop allows an impedance-optimized signal chain for outboard effects, but unless the EH isn’t set up to handle an instrument-level input (which I doubt), it sounds to me like you were combining distortion/overdrive stages that were set too hot.
Hope this helps some. Best to you.
