Post boxes taped up due to severe cold weather
Post boxes up and down the country have been taped up by Royal Mail staff struggling to deliver mail in the recent severe weather conditions.
Postboxes have become so full by people posting more and more mail that has not been delivered, that employees have had to resort to blocking them to stop more mail being posted.
Letterboxes in people's homes have also seen less action in the past week as the road networks struggle to cope with some of the coldest weather conditions ever recorded in the United Kingdom for this time of the year.
In fact some postboxes remain so full that postmen and delivery drivers have been unable to get them opened due to the sheer volume of post contained within them and the freezing temperatures that have been freezing the boxes.
Royal Mail has also had to withdraw its Special Delivery service for a few days as it was unable to guarantee that items could be delivered to some parts of the country by the following day.
Although additional trucks have been put on the roads and an increased number of rail services have been running, Royal Mail has still had to struggle along just like millions of other businesses in all parts of the country.
Managing director, Mark Higson has been quick to apologise to thousands of customers who have been waiting on mail deliveries or who have been unable to send items to other parts of the country.
He said: " I apologise to whose customers who have experienced delays due to their deliveries as a result of the severe weather.
"We are continuing to deliver to the vast majority of addresses but in some cases, it is not possible to do so because of the weather."
Weather experts are predicting that the freezing conditions could affect the country over the next few weeks.
