Guitar distortion pedal help!?
I am in the market for a distortion pedal for my guitar and i have been looking at a few but don't know which is the best one to invest in. I'm looking at the Turbo RAT, The Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, The MXR M116 Fullbore, and the Line 6 Tonecore Uber Metal. I don't want to get into something thats too expensive for my budget, I only want to spend around $100 because i also want to buy a compressor pedal possibly. My overall goal is to get close to a contemporary hard rock/post-hardcore tone that i can also take to heavier metal realms, but also lighter to blues (so i can mess around at my leisure when i'm not playing with my band). So if someone who has played any or all of these pedals could help guide me in the right direction I would be very grateful! And if there are other pedals that you could recommend to me to get me closer to my goal sound that would be great! Because i don't know many pedals and what types of pedals there are out there.Thank you for all posts!
Are you handy with a soldering iron, and confident enough to take out two of the diodes? I did a very basic mod where I turned my You Dirty Rat into both a Turbo Rat and back to the stock configuration with the addition of a switch. Cost me 5 dollars for the switch and I stole some LEDs from a broken radio. (distorted LEDs is what creates the unique tone of the Turbo rat). beats having to buy two pedals, and saves real estate on pedalboard. Turbo rat is great but I think it sounds best for stuff like YYY's or Sonic Youth. But it could work for you, I recommend trying it out first.
There is a clone of the rat floating around under the name Mouse and a couple other names on ebay. Made by Eagletone/biyang. Great pedal for the money, comes with similar switch to what I added to my Rat. I highly regard this pedal in comparison to the original, not identical but very similar.
Would recommend against the metalzone, and line 6.
