Why does my guitar keep getting out of tune after using tremolo?
I know it's not the best guitar, Squier by fender bullet strat.
If I just touch tremolo guitar get's totaly out of tune- so what to do?
Hello there,
Well you got 3 answers so far, and frankly, no help. Let me give this a try and see if I can't help you get your guitar set up to hold tune.
First thing. You need to lubricate the points of friction. 3 main points where the strings will rub against something. If the string drags at any of these, you have tuning problems. Nut, saddle and string trees. Use some graphite to lube those areas where the string will rub. Pencil lead works just fine. For instance, lift your string out of the slot in the nut. Rub pencil lead into the slot and replace the string. Same for the string trees and the saddles. Now you strings should slide easily.
Next thing you need to do is get your tremolo adjusted for the type of strings you have on your guitar. The tremolo is supposed to float level. Your strings will pull on the tremolo. So the tremolo has springs to counter that tension and pull the bridge back to level after use. Those springs have to be adjusted. Here is how you do that. Need a screwdriver and a ruler (I use a dime).
There are 6 screws that hold the bridge plate to the body. Loosen those 6 screws until they are up about 1/16th of an inch. I use a dime because it is handy to work with. The thickness of a dime is close enough. Now remove the plate on the back side that covers the tremolo springs cavity. 6 small screws hold it on to the body. You will see some springs running from the tremolo block to a claw. Probably have 3 springs in there. The claw is fastened to the body by 2 long screws. Measure how far the back side of the tremolo bridge plate is off the body. You want it up about 1/16ths of an inch. Again, I use the dime. When the dime just slides under, the bridge plate is level with the front (remember we moved the screws up the thickness of the dime). You adjust the pull of the springs. If the bridge plate is too close to the body you need less pull from the springs and you loosen the 2 screws that hold the claw. If the bridge is too high of the body, you tighten those 2 screws to put more pull on the bridge. When the back bridge plate is the same as the front (1/16th).You put the cover back on the springs cavity. Now you tighten only the outer 2 screws that hold the bridge plate down. Do not over tighten those 2 screws. Make them just snug but do not tighten so they pull the bridge down. Just snug them. Leave the inner 4 screws up. Your bridge will now pivot on the 2 outer screws.
Now your strings are lubed and your tremolo has the proper tension to return to level after use. If you have a problem with the guitar going out of tune down. The problem is not the tremolo. If could be 1 or 2 likely things. You do not have the strings wrapped correctly on the tuning pegs and the strings are slipping (most likely). Or one or more of the tuning pegs is slipping in the gears and need to be replaced (less likely).
Here is a video that shows the springs adjustment.
This guy does show you the method. Ignore his comments about how he prefers to take the float out of the tremolo bridge. Fender tremolo bridges are designed to float level. They are not designed to be pulled down tight to the body (as that guy prefers).
