Oranda has white fuzzy spots on his cap?
My oranda fancy goldfish had one white fuzzy spot on his head so I treated the tank with 2 courses of fungus cure. The spot went away for the most part but now, only a week later, the spot is back and there are now two spots. Could this be a bacteria instead of a fungus? Please - if you have fancy goldfish and had this happen please tell me how you got rid of the problem. Thanks!
P.S. It's definitely NOT Ick. I've had that before in my tropical fish aquarium and this is not that. Thanks!
Hi - thanks for your advice. I will try different fungus medication. You are a bit presumptuous about my water quality and housing of my goldfish. The water quality is perfect. I've had all of my goldfish less than 2 weeks and believe that they and/or the Oranda came already with a fungus when I bought them. I have 5 fancy goldfish in a 75 gallon aquarium so I don't think that's too crowded.
Look at these photos: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&um=1&sa=1&q=fish+fungus&btnG=Search+images&aq=f&oq= If the fuzzy stuff on your fish looks like this, then it is definitely fungus. In fact, simply by being fuzzy it is probably fungus.
Did you follow the instructions of the fungus treatment all the way through? If you don't use the medication for the full time or full dosage concentration that is required, then you can sometimes develop a resistant fungus. It most likely won't be killed if you treat with the same medication again, since the stuff that is currently on your goldfish survived that medication once before. This is how resistant strains develop.
Look at the active ingredient in your fungus medication. Then go to the store and buy a fungus medication that has a different active ingredient. What you've got on your hands is a slightly resistant strain of fungus, so you've got to kill it or you're making the medicine that you used less effective on the general population of fungi.
So go to the store and buy a medication that uses a different active ingredient. Do a partial water change in your aquarium and use activated carbon filtration or whatever the first medicine advised you to do to remove all of it from the water. You don't want the first medicine reacting with the second one.
Once you are sure that you have removed any last trace of the first medicine from the water, treat with the second and FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS exactly as they are stated. You don't want a super resistant strain to be formed! So make sure you wipe that fungus out right now. It already has partial immunity to one medicine. Don't let it survive a second.
Hopefully you'll kill the fungus, and the second, different, medicine will wipe it out completely. Good luck. Fighting resistant strains is difficult, but it must be done if our medicines are to stay effective.
By the way, your goldfish would never have gotten fungus in the first place if its water had 0 ppm ammonia, 0 ppm nitrite, and less than 20 ppm nitrate. Clean water makes for healthy fish. I bet its tank is too small or your weekly gravel siphons that remove 10 to 15% of the water aren't cutting it. Maybe your filtration is too weak. If your goldfish is in a bowl, then that's a problem. Put it in a large aquarium and give it double the filtration that is normally used for the aquarium size. Goldfish poop more than other fish, so you shouldn't feel too bad about having waste problems. Just fix the problem so that your fish doesn't get sick in the future. Add more filtration and possibly get a larger tank.
Update: You've had all of your fish less than two weeks? Did you cycle the aquarium before adding fish? Please test your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. If you did not cycle your tank, then the ammonia would have a readable level and you should do partial water changes to lower it.
