The main reason for its utility as a hideaway light is the fact that a strobe tube is clear. It is easy to attach it into an existing light in a way that it becomes visible only when activated. Trying to extubate a patient, the doctor peeled off the tape holding the tube in place and released air from the balloon-like inflator cuff.
At the end of the ET tube is an inflatable cuff. The purpose of this cuff is to form an airtight seal between the outside of the ET tube and the trachea. This also prevents secretions and, should vomiting occur, gastric contents from tracking down to the bronchi. It is important to ensure that the cuff remains inflated sufficiently to do this but over inflating the cuff may cause pressure on the wall of the trachea and damage to the mucosa.
The ET tube itself is kept securely in place by tying tapes around it at the lips and around the patient's neck.
