Do effects change the frequencies and wavelengths of a guitar?
I'm doing a science fair project about my guitar and i was wondering if effects, (like distortion, wah, flange, etc), will change the frequency or wavlength or tone or anything like that.
Yes, if energy signatures do not equal, then yes. What occurs is what you already listed: distortion, cacophany. Moreover, say, sub-signatures come to bear. These are evidence as sound shadows. Say, just compare a C natural with a C that is not so natural but slightly sharp or flat: the unnerving affect this bears upon the person with an ear can be rather disconcerting you would agree.
Since this is a science project, try this on for yourself by empirical methods, by taking your guitar to an audiology or physics lab setting and have the sound read out on an oscilloscope or some other technology fit for reading sound wavelengths or frequencies, and then behold the readings as these two or more effects merge. Then ask someone to assist you to chart these on x and y curves.
Energies are gradations of matter, and so, since any one can be less or more coarse than the other, but still within a certain range, there can occur a dissonance, which is what one calls 'noise'. Other energy signatures are too rarified to be picked up by anything but sensitive equipment: but they are there nonetheless.
In acoustic guitars in particular, even the shell of the guitar, that is, the material that comprises the guitar, has a tremendous affect on the sound, not to mention the strings used.
